Website -    our website https://dorypadstow.wixsite.com/dorypadstow contains information about the current status of restaurants and takeaways as a consequence of Covid 19.  Whilst we will try to keep this up to date, it is a fast moving area so keep your eyes on who’s opening locally as you walk through town.

People to call if you have a problem

Do please immediately contact these people if you have any issues with the property; they will be only too pleased to help and, of course, mentioning that something was wrong after you have gone home is no help to either you, the owner or the next occupants!  (See booking condition no. 15.)

Housekeeper

Problems with the standard of cleaning, if you want to arrange special or extra cleaning or if you have not been provided with cleaning materials, dustbin bags etc. at the start of your stay – please contact

Jo Nicholas 07976 186588

Caretaker

If an appliance is not working correctly, there is something which is missing or broken or there is something wrong with the building or services – please contact the caretaker

Andrew Ellis   07854-368934

NB.  Before contacting the Caretaker please note the most commonly occurring faults in holiday homes – listed on the following page.

Possible solutions to common problems

Ovens

The oven or grill not working! In the vast majority of cases this is due to the fact that the oven has been set to automatic or, with some ovens, that the clock has not been set.  Please consult the oven instruction booklet. Please also check that the mains switch on the wall has not been turned off.

Fridges

The ‘fridge is not working at all or is not cold enough. Please check that the mains switch on the wall has not been turned off and that the thermostatic control inside the ‘fridge has not been set to off or to a setting which is too low. If the ‘fridge is cold at the back but not cold enough at the front this could be because there is too much food in there to allow the cold air to circulate.

Washing Machine Door will not open

Usually this is because there is a time delay on the machine – check the washing machine instruction book. Leave at least 5 minutes before attempting to open the washing machine. Do not force the handle. If the door still will not open call the caretaker.  PLEASE NOTE – YOU MAY BE CHARGED IF YOU BREAK THE DOOR HANDLE.

Water heater – electric

No hot water!  Check to see that the water heater is turned on.  Allow time for the water to flow from the heater to the tap.

Loss of Electricity Supply

Loss of all supply - Please check that the main earth trip breaker has not been activated (its location should be listed under “SERVICES” later in this manual.) NB.  This can cut out for something as simple as a light bulb failing.  If the trip is still on it is likely that there is a problem with the electricity company’s supply either due to a general power cut, a local supply fault or just possibly a failure in the electricity company fuse.  You could confirm whether there is a general power cut or a local supply fault by enquiring at an adjacent property. The helpline for the local electricity company (Western Power) is 0800 365 900 - you will need to give the postcode (see front of this information folder or your direction pack).

Loss of part supply - Please check the main fuse board to see that an individual circuit breaker has not been tripped (its location is in the understairs cupboard.) - NB this can cut out for something as simple as a light bulb failing.

Water Supply

A discolouration in the water is usually due to a change in pressure or a leak on the mains water supply nearby. The discoloured water should be reported to South West Water on 0800 169 1144 – you will need to give the postcode (see front of this information folder or your direction pack).  Assuming they are already aware of the problem they will usually be able to tell you how long it is likely to last. They will also usually advise you to run the supply for an hour or until the water runs clear. If the property is on a water meter they should tell you that they will credit the owners account for the run-off water used.

Cloudy or milky looking water is usually because air has got into the system and, in that case, is safe to drink.

TV not working

Check that it is plugged in and switched on at the wall, the aerial lead is plugged in at both ends, and that the dvd or video player (if provided) is plugged in and switched on both at the wall and on the player.

Wifi not working

Double check that the router is plugged in to the mains and to the telephone point.  When connected to the network the router should be showing a steady blue light.  The instructions are in the general folder but as always with this kind of stuff when all else fails turn it off at the wall and then start again.

Emergency Services

Emergency: FIRE, POLICE, AMBULANCE or COASTGUARD dial 999 or 112

Police – 101  for non-emergency enquiries

Dentist – 01841 532373

NHS Direct – 0845 4647 (24hr. helpline)

Vet – 01841 520647

Doctor – 01841 532346

If the surgery is closed you will be directed to the appropriate means of contacting a doctor out of hours, either by direct transfer or by answerphone message.  You must listen to the whole message, as there may be different telephone numbers to ring at different times of the day.  The out of hours service is for conditions which cannot wait until the surgery opens the next morning.  Make the call from a telephone which is able to receive incoming calls, since in most cases the doctor will need to telephone the patient back.  If you call on behalf of someone else, ensure that you have full personal details of the patient.  Patients may be given an appointment at one of the out of hours surgeries.  Note that these are by appointment only; that if patients arrive without an appointment they will be asked to telephone for an appointment, before they can be seen.  Usually the centres are not continuously manned.

Points to Note During Your Stay

Rubbish

Rubbish is collected on Friday, often very early in the morning.   The Council will only collect bagged rubbish from the kerb; please place your rubbish in the dustbin at the bottom of the steps at the front of the property, the bag will then be removed by the dustmen.  Do not leave bags of rubbish outside, please put it in the bin.

If you have not been left a supply of dustbin bags contact the housekeeper. It is particularly important that absolutely all rubbish is bagged because otherwise the dustmen will not take it . - they do not have bin lifts on their refuse lorries.

Bank Holidays

Weeks with a Bank Holiday – no change to rubbish collection arrangements.

Collection point for this property is directly outside the propery

The disposal of refuse during the holiday season is a major headache for property owners, caretakers and housekeepers.  We would be extremely grateful if you can limit the amount of rubbish generated and please make sure you do not miss BIN DAY

Recycling –  the nearest bottle bank together with aluminium, clothing and paper banks are located at the large long stay carpark off the link road at the top of Padstow next to the Fire Station.

Breakages and Faults

If you should break or damage something during your stay, please arrange for the item to be replaced or repaired.  If this is not possible please contact the owner/caretaker and arrange to pay for the repair/replacement.

If something should go wrong during your stay please inform the caretaker IMMEDIATELY. Do not leave this until the end of your stay because there may then be insufficient time to correct the defect before the next occupant arrives.

Parking, boundaries, etc.

The property parking space is located in front of garage number 12.  This is the second garage in the garage block in front of the property.  You will see the garage as you take the left turn towards the property.

Security

Please make sure that you lock up and make the property secure when you go out and at night.  Keys are located in the key safe.  Please make sure you put keys back where you found them on departure.

House stuff made simple

  • Water

    • The boiler has no pilot light and works when the hot taps are turned on.

    • The boiler controls are quite simple but probably best just ignored

    • Water temperature is factory pre-set at 48 deg C.  It can’t go any higher.

    • Hot water taps are to the left.

    • The shower works simplest if the hot tap is turned on full and when running hot some cold is then mixed in to suit.

    • It takes a while for the hot water to get from the water heater in the kitchen to the tap (even in the kitchen but especially in the bathroom) so please be patient and don’t put the plug in until the hot is running through continuously.

  • Electric fire

    • The fire is controlled using the hand held white remote control device.  To keep the operation simple:

      • Press the main power button on the remote.

      • After a few seconds press the ‘fan on’ button on the remote. This will start the electric fan automatically.  There will be a short delay (few seconds) between the fan starting and heat switching on.

      • To turn off just press the main power button on the remote

      • If possible please avoid adjusting the settings on the remote and keep it to on/off for ease of operation.

      • There is a main power switch on the left hand underside of the canopy on the fire and this should always be set to the on position and does not need to be turned off at all.

      • The fire is set to maximum output when in operation.

  • Electric heaters (inc towel rail)

    • The only control needed is the button marked ‘Boost’ and with a blue backlight.

    • Press this button a number of times and further LEDs light to show the heater has been set for 15 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour or 2 hours.

    • All other controls are behind secure panels and not really needed.

    • If the blue LED lights get on your nerves (although they can be pretty useful night lights for young kids) then just turn the unit off at the wall.

  • Cooker

    • If the power has been turned off (or if the display says’STOP’)

      • Turn power switch on (display will say ‘STOP’)

      • Press middle button 3 times until arrow points to clock symbol

      • Turn right dial to set time

      • Oven can now be used

    • To use the oven

      • Use Left hand dial to set required function

        • Light

        • Warmer

        • Fan oven

        • Grill

        • Grill and fan

      • Then use Right hand dial to set required temperature

      • The oven is meant to be up to temperature when 4 small arrows on the top of the display are all lit up

      • We think the oven tends to run about 10 degrees C or so below the level it is set at and it would be sensible to allow a further 10 minutes or so warming up time after the 4 small arrows are lit.

      • Turn the left dial to zero to turn off

    • Please be aware that the oven shelves can tip forward when they are slid out of the oven.  This could tip contents out of the oven.

  • Washing machine

    • Wash only

      • Turn machine on

      • Select wash cycle using left hand dial

      • Set required wash temperature using central ‘temperature’ dial

      • Set Drying Time to Zero

      • Press ‘Start’

    • Dry only

      • Turn machine on

      • Using wash ‘Cycle’ dial select programme 11 or 12

      • Ignore central ‘Temperature’ dial

      • Set right hand ‘Drying’ dial to Iron, Hangar or Cupboard as required

      • Press ‘Start’

    • Wash and dry

      • Turn machine on

      • Select wash cycle prograame using left hand dial

      • Select water temperature using central dial

      • Select required drying time using right hand dial

      • Press ‘Start’

  • Wifi

  • The wifi network is BTHub4-FJ6N

  • The password is 4c3f5724c2

  • Music system

    • In the lounge is a Bluetooth sony speaker.  Most gadgets with music and a Bluetooth capability can be paired with it.

    • Easiest place to start is to search for Bluetooth devices on your phone, ipod etc and if you see SRS-BTX300 then just hit ‘Connect’ and that should be all it takes.

    • If your device cannot ‘see’ the speaker press the Bluetooth button on the right hand side of the speaker until the blue light flashes.  At that point your device should ‘see’ the speaker.

    • If that doesn’t work the instruction book is in the folder

    • Failing that you can connect through a single jack point lead (not provided)

    • Please note that only one device can be connected at a time and a device needs to be disconnected before another can connect.

  •

  • TV / BluRay / DVD

    • Simple enough to operate – just press a channel number on the TV remote to get it going, but the instructions are in the folder

    • The DVD player is connected through the HDMI 1 connection

General

  • Access to rear garden

    • Via the path that runs behind the garage block off to the left out of the front door

  • Please be aware that the path at the front of the house is also used as vehicular access to the garage block to the left.  Please be careful with young children running down the steps into the path without checking for cars.

  • Parking

    • In addition to the reserved space in front of garage 12, unreserved parking is also available

      • 3 spaces (un-numbered) in front of the garage block to the left out of the front door – the spaces facing towards the house

      • 1 space in front of the garage block that includes ours

      • Some spaces in the bay on the opposite side of Sarah’s View

  • Rubbish

    • Bin day is Friday

    • Please put all rubbish out before you leave and

      • Please ensure all rubbish is bagged before being placed in the bin

  • Electrical consumer unit (fuse box in old money)

    • Located in the cupboard under the stairs

  • Mains water stop tap

    • Located under the sink

  • Mains gas

    • In meter cupboard just outside front door to left (key on top of fuse box under stairs)

  • Dishwasher

    • Turn the machine on

    • Select the required wash programme

    • Press ‘Start’

  • Microwave

    • The microwave will not work unless the clock is set

    • If the clock shows ’88.88’ then set the time by:

      • Press Timer/Clock twice

      • Set the time using 10Min, 1Min, 10Sec buttons

      • Press Timer/Clock once

    • To use the microwave press ‘Micropower’ to set the required power level (it varies depending on how many times the button is pressed), then select time using the timer pads and press Start

  •

  • Baby stuff

    • There is a high chair and travel cot in the back bedroom.

    • Sliding safety gates are at the top and bottom of the stairs – the instruction leaflet is in the brochure.  Please handle them with care. When not in use they are kept below the stairs.

Directions to:

  • Town (on foot)

    • Left out of door then left up the path at the far side of garages

    • Straight over Sarah’s Lane and along Trelawney Rd, then take the third right down to Dennis Rd

    • Left towards the top of New St which then runs down to the main square

  • A30 (by car)

    • Up to Tesco and turn left

    • Keep straight on until you reach a roundabout then turn right (signed St Columb)

    • First left at the next roundabout

    • This runs parallel to the A30 then crosses it and the junction is at a place called Roche

    • This is much quicker than the lanes down towards Wadebridge and Bodmin

  • The Camel Trail (on foot)

    • Left out of door then left up the path at the far side of garages

    • Turn right on Sarah’s Lane and keep going all the way down hill till your feet get wet, and you’re there.

    • At that point left will run you into Padstow, right heads off towards Wadebridge (but it’s quite a few miles into Wadebridge)

Things to do / places to go

In and around Padstow

The tourist information centre in town is a really good place to start working out what you can do whilst here.  It is on the North Quay of the harbour out towards the ferry point.

  • National Lobster hatchery – by the cycle hire place at the start of the Camel trail

  • Crazy golf – over towards the ferry

  • Cycle hire

    • there are 2 places (Padstow Cycle Hire and Trail Bike Hire), both down at the start of the Camel trail.  The biggest one is the first one you see and is slightly more expensive (not much) but has the advantage of a shop in Wadebridge which will fix anything that might have gone wrong with your bike

    • Padstow to Wadebridge is a decent easily manageable ride.  When you get there a good place for a coffee stop is the Co-op shop in the centre

      • Keep on going straight into town

      • The Co-op is on the roundabout in the centre and has a coffee shop together with bike stands right outside the front door

    • For coffee also look out for ‘the Shed’ and ‘Tims Place’

    • If heading further then keep going over the roundabout.  The trail changes after Wadebridge although it’s still on the old rail track (more like a river bank ride).  A decent run will get you to the Borough Arms just this side of Bodmin and they do a pretty decent lunch.  And on the way back it’s all downhill.

  • Beaches

    • No shortage of those round here, the main ones being

      • Town beach – keep going round the harbour, up the path past the crazy golf, towards the monument and follow the signs (on foot)

      • Constantine bay

      • Watergate bay

      • Harlyn bay

        • All of these have car parks but they can get rammed in summer (go early-ish to be safe)

    • Don’t forget Rock (huge beach) and Polzeath (surfer’s paradise)

    • There are a whole host of surf hire places and small outfits only too keen to teach (or try to teach in our case) you how to do it.  They all provide the wetsuits and equipment you need.

  • Fishing

    • There are plenty of fishing opportunities around here.  The Padstow Angling centre on The Drang (01841 532762, 07929 233902) would be a good place to start to get tips on places to go or excursions to take.

  • Golf – some of the most local are

    • Trevose

    • St Enedoc, at Rock

    • Merlin, at St Mawgan

  • St Eval Candle Company – if you like scented candles then this is the place for you.  They have a factory shop just off the Padstow-Newquay coast road which would be worth a visit.

  • Walking – the Coast Path is the obvious place to start.  Serious walkers will probably already have their itineraries sorted out.  For the less serious walkers there are a couple of routes we would recommend

    • 1 The shortest would be to walk round Pentyre Point.  This is the headland out past Rock and the walk starts from the car park in New Polzeath.  It is circular and brings you back to where you started.

    • 2 Take the ferry over to Rock and then head left along the coast into Polzeath.  Nice cup of coffee and cake at TJ’s surf place Cafe on the beach (the one with the upstairs veranda) then wander back for lunch at the Blue Tomato Cafe.

    • 3 A short loop starting by going through the church yard then up the hill past Prideaux place, keeping the house to the left follow the road under the bridge and then round and down to the farm.  Path runs to the right of the farm and joins the coast path just before Hawkers Cove.

    • 4 Slightly longer loop starting the same way but taking a footpath signed off right from the road before the farm.  Heads to Crugmeer.  Through Crugmeer (sort of a staggered cross roads) then across and down into Trevone Bay for coffee.  Back along the coast path via Stepper point.

    • 5 Alternatively you could try the coast path heading through Padstow towards Newquay and the get a cab back from, say, Harlyn Bay or (much further) Trevose Golf Club.  If you get out to Stepper Point (left hand edge of the entrance to the estuary then don't miss the coastguard volunteer look out station – they're very friendly and enjoy showing walkers what they do).

    • Have a look at the OS map on the wall in the kitchen for some further help.

  • Sailing – try the Padstow sailing club or Rock.  Small boat sailing is probably better in Rock.

  • Cornwall Birds of Prey – on the road to St Columb.

  • Trevibben Mill winery.  On the way in to Padstow from St Columb.  They are very welcoming and no need to book ahead if you want to turn up for a visit.  The tasting selection they offer is excellent.

  • Lusty Glaze beach in Newquay.  Lots of action going on there.  Check out the website.

  • If you get the chance go listen to the Fishermans Friends in Port Isaac.  Weather and tour dates permitting they play for free on the slipway in Port Isaac on a Friday evening.  Check their facebook page.

Further afield the Eden Project is near Bodmin.  Charlestown is worth a visit (on the south coast) where they film the harbour scenes in Poldark.  Tintagel can be very impressive and the town has loads of pubs and restaurants.  Boscastle is an attractive spot to visit.  There is the Retallack Resort and Spa on the way to St Columb which has a wake board line and a flowrider pool which you would need to book ahead.  There is a lovely walk you can take along the coast at Bedruthan Steps starting from the National Trust car park.  And of course there is Crealy's Adventure Theme Park near Wadebridge.  Falmouth is not far in the car and there is a lot to do along the waterfront and main shopping street.

A recent copy of the National Trust handbook is in the cottage and may be helpful in finding places to visit.

Below is an extract from the Information Folder.  Some of the formatting has been lost in copying over, but hopefully it will be helpful
